Petals

Zooming in on this ranunculus revealed tiny reflections of light on the very edges of the petals, that I otherwise would have never seen.  (click the photo to see a larger image)

Visit to the Ocean

A brilliant blue sky greeted me at the ocean's door.  I was welcomed at once by cool rushes of little waves at my feet, almost as if asking me to dance.  Of course I obliged as many as I could, while the others ebbed back and forth, painting pictures just for me in the sand with a palette of browns, golds, and black.  I slowly turned this way and that, trying my best to catch a glimpse of each one revealed as the waves receded.  With each new creation, a crowd of bubbles would gather for their regular critique, then scurry away, all a-buzz with chatter about their next arrival.  While I waited for their return, I watched each moment fade in the water as it disappeared below the sand.

Although I longed for each second as soon as it was gone, a deep breath of air off the pounding surf helped to quell my melancholy mood.  The ocean wind blew a strand of hair from my eyes to reveal a horizon of shimmering lights as each swell reached up at just the right angle to catch the sun.  Every wave perfect, every wave different.  Each starts as a deep blue, the very top breaks downward into a sheet of absolutely unparalleled aquamarine blue as the falling water thins out, then crashes to the surface into an explosion of white.  They beckoned me to come closer, compared to them I am a mere whisper.  Their voices are a lullaby to me, and put me at such ease that their absence causes an emptiness that nothing else can ever fulfill.
I kept telling myself it was time to go, but the hypnotic rhythm of the tide was much too soothing to leave just yet.  I walked back to catch up with the bubbles to say our goodbyes for the day.  As I turned to face the ocean, the setting sun presented me its gift of a million stars shining up from the water.  And as I walked away, I looked back over my shoulder to see the water one more time, only to realize the ocean had stolen my heart in hope of my return.  Then, not wanting to reveal our secret rendez-vous to unsuspecting passers-by, the waves washed away my footprints like I was never there.  :)
